How One Person Opened My Eyes to Online Entrepreneurship
I was blind to the possibilities of online entrepreneurship until one person showed me what a regular mortal could accomplish.
As I was organising my desktop, I came across an ebook dating back to 2013, written by a lifestyle entrepreneur I used to follow. I had completely forgotten about it.
This entrepreneur was the first “of his kind” I discovered. Before being aware of the existence of “lifestyle entrepreneurs”, I had no idea that a life doing something other than working a 9–5 was possible. I was probably in a grim mental cave when I googled the internet for something like “how do I build a better life” or “how do I make money without doing stuff I dislike” that landed me on the website.
After university, the far majority of people around me took the traditional route or pursued a corporate career. Friends and acquaintances seemed to also want that life. Or they claimed to want it. I thought it was the only option for me too after going to university. Mainly because it was all I saw.
I couldn’t care less about a fancy title at a big corporation. A great pay? Sure, I want that, a condo also. I want the road there to be different.
That taken road never appealed to me that much. Same with the idea that there was only one road through life. Being a “Jill of Many Trades”, I don’t have skills nor a deep interest in just one or a few topics. I know a bit of many things. Guess that makes me a generalist. It also makes it harder to put myself in a box or follow one path strictly.
I realised the following: There is no ready-made path out there for me that I can follow. I have to carve it out myself.
Heck, my mentor in university once told me that she thought “there is no one study for you to follow”. That shook me, but she was right.
Henri, the entrepreneur from earlier, had built his business and livelihood around something he loved to do. Working from wherever he wanted, on what he wanted and when. “Now that’s something I need to learn more about”, I thought.
I signed up to his newsletters, received his ebook in my mailbox, and read through it with great interest and enthusiasm. The guy maintains a blog, sells courses and books, and runs a Youtube channel, amongst others.
I skimmed through the ebook I found earlier today, “The Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Lifestyle Business”. The content inside is still valid today. You can make any kind of lifestyle business work, on your terms, when you are able to add value by helping people solve or alleviate their problems, because this is what people are willing to pay for. A better life.
Right now it looks like everyone, their neighbor, their neighbor’s dog and their stuffed animal is an influencer, entrepreneur, coach or otherwise online guru. Or maybe it looks like that because I am heavily invested in building up something of my own through the internet as well.
What you don’t see, doesn’t exist to you. Call it ignorance or a blind spot. My eyes are wide open now. I see what is possible, and Henri was the first to show me. It just took a while to start taking action.
